This story takes place in America when the underground railroad was still on for black slaves.
Recount of story
The story is about a deaf boy named Luke and his mother. They are supposed to meet a black girl at the general store and give her a secret message of where to hide go next. As they were about to leave their house a man came in. He would not let mama go to the store figuring she would give a message to some slaves. Instead he takes Luke. Luke will have to deliver the message on his own!
The secrets
After reading the book we looked at the three things that made it good.
Alliteration
Alliteration is when you have two or more words right beside each other and they both have the same beginning sound like painting pictures, resting roughly, and even secret signs. It is like rhyming, except the same sound is at the beginning of the word instead of the end!
Personification
Personification is when something "non-living" is described as though it were acting like a person, for example, "his fingers searched the eggs" and "Alex's hands painted pictures in the air".
Powerful adjectives
Powerful adjectives are adjectives that really give you a picture in your mind like shimmering, fluttering, and bony. The author had plenty of those.
It was great reading this book and my favourite part of it is that the main character's deaf.
