About
My name is Vera. I am a certified teacher and mother of monozygotic twin boys, Alex and Simon, and partner to a brilliant writer, mathematician and aspiring commercial pilot, Tatiana. For some years now, I have felt the pull of overseas living. We've traveled to many places, but most often as "tourists". In 2012, we decided to investigate the possibility of moving "somewhere else" for the year.
We wanted to expose the boys to a world outside consumerist, materialistic North America. Our destination criteria were 3-fold: It had to be warm, it had to offer different-enough fare to make it worth it to uproot the family for the year, and it had to be LGBTQ-friendly. By all accounts, Buenos Aires fit the bill, with the added bonus that one can go see the penguins while in Argentina! So we began researching this crazy idea in earnest, in terms of making arrangements at work and seeking support from Alex and Simon's father.
For the school year 2013-2014, I have taken an unpaid leave of absence through work. We will be home schooling the boys during this time, and hope also to do some volunteer work in one or more schools and/or slums in Argentina. Tatiana will be taking an online writing course, as well as an intensive Spanish course at the University while in Buenos Aires, and will also complete some flight training in the US during our "year off".
A key aspect of the boys' writing program will be to blog from their perspectives about our adventures. We invite you to follow the journey by reading and commenting on:
