Did one of my favourite lessons today with the boys... we'd been reading some poetry these past few weeks (Mary O'Neill, Robert Frost, Langson Hughes, Emily Dickinson...), and I figured it was time to try our hand at writing some. So I pulled out the ol' Larry Swartz "Poems from Paintings" lesson, and shared some classic "Group of Seven" and Tom Thompson shots with the boys.
For each painting, they had to write down the first word or phrase that came to mind. Then, they used their words to develop a poem based on the Canadiana nature theme. It could be a list poem, or a rhyming poem, or whatever they wanted, really.
