If you're looking for some great apps for your child or his/her teacher this holiday season, check out the EasyLearn series, by "Fun App School".
I first discovered this series while recently downloading some Rocks and Minerals app. Their app on this topic looked very good -- high quality photos, easy useability... I was a little hesitant about the $2.99 price tag, but I was not disappointed with this app. It is well worth the money!
The "home" screen greets you with 3 options: "Learn", "Practise" and "Quiz".
Clicking the first section, "Learn", opens a table of contents, which outlines a variety of topics. Clicking any of these brings up some great photos or diagrams, along with a short, topic-specific text. Really, it's a perfectly sized chunk for reluctant readers in your classroom.
In the "Practice" section, host of matching, trivia, sorting games and puzzles can be found, again, including outstanding photgraphs of the subject matter.

The "Quiz" section offers a similar selection of games, as well as a "mixed" option, but this time, you don't get to see right away how you did.
The boys were excited to use this app; they especially enjoyed the games. Both of them immediately wanted to download additional apps by this developer, and -- as a variety of curriculum-linked Science topics is are covered -- so did I!
We were not disappointed with "Adaptations in Animals", "Solar Systems", or "Diseases", all three of which we downloaded within a week.
Each app in the series is set up similarly, offering "Learn, "Practise" and "Quiz" options, and using the same, high quality images, specific to that topic.
Given that a decent non-fiction guided reading text costs upwards of $8 a piece, and generally does not include any interactive component, I would say that the $2.99 a piece is a great deal of this series of apps. EasyLearn has been designed with both the student and the teacher in mind. I'm glad I stumbled upon then; they've made a great addition to my Science and Literacy programs!
