Every great city has a McDonald's, it seems, and a respectable performing arts theatre or two (or several). One of the most famous of the latter in Buenos Aires is the Teatro Colon, located right downtown, near the Obelisk, a short walk from Tribunales station on the Green (D) line.
Last night, I was lucky enough to attend the Ballet at Teatro Colon, and saw its spectacular interior for the first (but hopefully not the last) time!
One thing that I find really neat about the Arts here is how accessible they are to all, financially speaking. Many galleries and museums are cheap or free, and even world class theatre here comes in a range of prices. Tickets to the ballet were available for as little as $30-something pesos (about five dollars US!) for nose-bleeds or standing only positions in the back, right up to $620 pesos (about $70 US).
We had mid-range tickets, seats in one of the upper balconies, with a relatively unobstructed view of the stage.
The theatre itself is as magnificent as the performances it provides the backdrop for, and we all gasped with excitement as we entered and took in the grandiose setting.

Over a hundred years old, the Colon is a spectacle of visual and performing arts. Frescos adorn the cieling, and the names of famous classical composers and characters from well-known dramas are painted around the perimeter.
The sound quality here is said to be one of the best in the world, and I can honestly say that it far surpasses any performance hall I have visited in Toronto. Although the score of tonight's ballet was not my favourite, the exceptional quality of the sound captivated me through most of the acts. I am eager to attend a musical performance here at the Colon before we leave the city in May 2014.
